The single most confusing thing about Gmail signatures is that the web version and the Gmail mobile app keep entirely separate settings. Changing your signature on the web does not change what sends from your phone, and the mobile app's signature is plain text only — it cannot hold a logo, formatting or links. That is why so many people are certain they fixed their signature and still see the old one: they fixed one of the two. On the web, signatures live in Settings (the gear icon) › See all settings › the General tab, well down the page. In the mobile app they sit under the menu › Settings › your account › the mobile-signature option. If you want one consistent branded signature everywhere, the practical answer is to set the rich one on the web and either disable the mobile signature or keep it to a single plain line.
Under the signature editor Gmail shows signature defaults — two dropdowns, one for new emails and one for replies and forwards. Leaving the replies dropdown on “No signature” is the second most common cause of “my signature disappeared”: it appears on new mail and vanishes in every thread. There is also a checkbox controlling whether the signature is inserted before or after quoted text; placing it before the quote keeps threads readable. If you run several send-as addresses, note that each address can hold its own signature — changing one leaves the others untouched, which catches out anyone emailing from both a personal and a business alias.

Gmail's settings page saves only at the bottom of the page. Closing the tab discards everything.

Gmail keeps only inline-styled HTML. A signature pasted from a word processor or design tool loses its styling; a generator that writes email-safe HTML avoids it.
